28 Weeks Later

Our experience with 28 Weeks Later started in quite possibly the nicest theater I’ve ever been to in my life. The West End Apollo theater, just south of Piccadilly Circus, where admission was £12.50 and two beers for the cheapest I’ve seen in the entire city, £3.20. The movie was filmed in the city of London and utilizes the city as the setting to tell the story. The film shows several places within the city, both well known and places where no one except the people that live there know where they are. London provides the perfect backdrop for the film due to it being on the island of Great Britain, and the River Thames creating a dramatic geographic setting. In the film the new residents of London are living right on the River Thames, making the setting when the outbreak occurs a confined area forcing the infected with the residents creating some horrific encounters. The characters are forced to navigate the complex streets of London in order to survive, and in the process show the world, views of the city that most people never see. The film nears the end after a trip all through London and coming to a climax in, with careful detective work, Harlesden tube station in northwest London. There is finally a resolution to the events that has transpired in London’s own Wembley Field, which the filmmakers made it up to look as if it was deserted for 6 months, adding to the authentic feel of the film.
