Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Vicky Cristina Barcelona illustrates the many different emotions and reactions a traveler has coming to a new country with an open mind ready for new experiences, as well as a closed mind that already contains preconceived notions about cultural differences. As a new traveler, it is easy to connect with both Vicky, a conservative and reserved woman who is about to be married, as well as Cristina, a stubborn risk taker who would risk her own health for a priceless experience. This movie showed me the importance, as well as the hazards involved with having one way of looking at the new experiences encountered while traveling.

If I were to revise this movie and add a scene based on my own experiences, it would be one that helped clarify Vicky's reluctancy toward Juan Antonio. For example, if another older, less attractive man had initially approached them and had portrayed the stereotypical Spanish machismo and made them feel and appear visibly uncomfortable. This can be found in any country and young girls are always bound to encounter this when they are alone in a public place like a restaurant or a pub. This would have made Juan Antonio seem even more attractive and semi-heroic to Cristina and less appealing to Vicky initially. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and watching Juan Antonio take everyone completely outside their comfort zone in such a short amount of time and ultimately give them a new perspective about life, whether it was his goal or not.
