Fugitive Pieces

Fugitive Pieces is all about Jakob’s search for a love.  At the beginning of the film we see that he had the only love he ever knew, his family, ripped away from him during the Holocaust.  As he sprints through the woods to save his own life, he is found and carried to safety by a stranger, Athos.  Jakob learns to trust and love this stranger, but the emptiness still exists as he is reminded of his family through terrible nightmares and flashbacks.  When he meets Alex, he believes that she can take away his pain and bring him back to a life and love he used to know.  But everything is wrong.  She leaves and he doesn’t stop her.  Next he is introduced to Michaela and there is something different; the two are immediately connected.

The audience knows that Michaela is exactly what Jakob needs when the two are in Greece.  Every aspect shows how the two have fallen for each other.  Moreover, when they are lying in bed together there is an overwhelming sense of love and passion for one another.  Jakob kisses every inch of her body, adoring even her smell of sweat, and the two make love.  It is at this moment where it is apparent that Michaela will fill the whole in his heart and replace his burning pain for the loss of his family.  It is the turning point in his life, and his is able to let go of his memories and his past, and create a future with Michaela and their expectant child.
