8 1/2

I have to give Fellini some credit for this film. I think it is the basis for exploring the subconscious on film. We got to explore Guido's innermost feelings at a time when such a thing was almost unheard of in film at the time. For that, I have to give Fellini props. My criticism of the movie would have to be execution. I felt that the film was good enough for it's time (the turbulent 60's), but the production values then do not translate very well into today's culture where we are spoiled by well-edited, well-crafted films; no matter how asinine their plots may be (ahem, hollywood). I was able to follow what was happening in the film from the trouble director's dream sequences and freudian reveries to the sudden shifts back to reality. The social commentary on the pressure exerted on the individual also resonated with me and I find it even more relevant in today's world. As much as i did not like the ending, I can also appreciate it that much more given its role as a the resolution. Fellini let us decide for ourselves what his cryptic ending was about. Or it may have just been his way to blow off some steam after the filming was done. For that, I appreciate it's role in modern cinema.
